Cavern of Sonora is Cleaned

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

An impressive work is done at Caverns of Sonora, Texas, United States. The debris of the show cave development is removed. Hundreds of tons of rocks have been dropped into pits and passages in order to build the paths. Now every year a group of cavers removes rocks and cleans the cave. After 14 years most of the rubble has now been removed and the next years detailed and delicate clean-ups with much smaller teams are planned.

Great work folks!

The Descent Movie aired

Tuesday, November 15th, 2005

This week the new cave-horror movie from England finally aired in Germany. The story is simple: six young women meet once a year for an extreme sport weekend. Female city slickers on their way into the twilight zone.

This years adventure for the girls is spelunking, and as expected, they do every thing the wrong way: they tell nobody about their trip, go into the wrong pit, have inappropriate equipment and finally meet troglophilic relatives of count Dracula. White and slimy creatures, with pointy ears and pointy teeth, looking like an albino Klaus Kinski in the Werner Herzog movie Nosferatu.

What starts as a disgusting collection of stupidity and incompetence resulting from extreme sport arrogance, ends in a splatter orgy of the worst kind. Heaps of bones, pools of blood, hundreds of white creatures crawling along the ceiling, and the members of the team get killed one after the other.

I would have given 0 of 10 point, but there are two fine details which made me give 1 point. First half point is for the nice sequence where the six descent into the daylight shaft. Nice pictures. And the second half is for the end. It makes clear that it is not a Hollywood mainstream movie at all.

Hans Binder has died

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2005

The German karst scientist Hans Binder died on 26. October.

He was very important for show caves, as he wrote the German show cave guidebook. It was first published in the 1950s and updated several times. He also wrote a book about caves on the Swabian Jura, which contains semi-wild caves wich can be visited on hiking tours.
