Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Monday, December 26th, 2005

Probably you mentioned it: no post during December!

I was busy drinking mulled claret (Gerstacker Weinkellerei Nürnberg) and gingerbread liquor (Edeldestillation Haas). And the original Nuremberg Elisenlebkuchen, a gingerbread made without flour, only with various nuts and sugar, was pretty important too. I know this has nothing to with caves, but I was busy and could not work on the blog….

Okay, this was a joke. I worked on the website, see the post about Norway. But there were no news about show caves during winter. We will see if there is something to tell in January. So I hope you had a Merry Christmas and wish all of you a Happy New Year!

Christmas and Winter Time

Monday, December 26th, 2005

Probably you mentioned: not much on the blog. The reason is simple: in winter most of the show caves are closed, tourism is restricted to skiing, at least on the northern hemisphere.
Our tip: have a look at the Caribbean Islands or Mallorca. Both are fine cave destinations during winter.
Most of the tourist caves and mines in Europe and the United Stated are closed during winter, either because of unsufficient amounts of visitors, or because of bat protection.

Mines of Norway

Monday, December 26th, 2005

Norway is a country of very old and diverse rocks, extremely interesting geology and a wealth of minerals. We recommend a trip to Norway very much for everybody who loves geology, minerals or overwhelming breakfasts. Norway is famous for its seafood too.
At showcaves.com we had a chapter for Norway for a very long time. Primarly interested in caves we listed some “show caves” around Mo i Rana. A new research resulted in numerous changes on the entries of this country: we removed all but one caves from the show caves section. They are not gone, just moved to the (wild) caves section, where spelunking tours are listed.
But also we improved the other listings for the country. We added 18 public mines. Two of them, together with a newly added spelunking tour are located on Spitzbergen, which belongs to Norway. (Jochens favourite for next years holidays).
Please have a look.
