Horses and the Dangers of Caves

Friday, September 1st, 2006

The 28 month old Belgain workhorse Ruby was grazing on a farm in Hardin County, Kentucky, U.S.A., on Wednesday when she lost her footing and tumbled backward into a nine meter deep hole.

It took nearly four hours to rescue the horse. First veterinarian Chad Bailey of Elizabethtown was lowered into the cave. He gave the horse a muscle relaxer and anesthesia, so she was unconscious for about 30 minutes. The Radcliff fire men under Chief Rick Ledford managed to tie safety belts around the horse and a crane lifted her sideways and brought her back to the surface. Ruby was declared in excellent condition after the rescue.
